| Having been raised across the Arkansas line, Ricky has returned to manage Idabel Country Club's course and pro shop. The past 20 years Ricky has been in northeast MS, near Memphis, TN, where he gained Class A and Certified status through the Golf Course Supt Association of America. As a Superintendent, Ricky has almost totally rebuilt the courses where he worked, from installing irrigation to being on the cutting edge, working on new ultradwarf grasses for putting surfaces. His enthusiasm was contagious as he was elected President of The Southern Turfgrass Association, by his peers. Growing grass and manicuring golf courses isn't his only forte' . He was awarded a golf scholarship to Ouachita University where he helped his team advance to the Nationals on three separate occasions. Self earned "All Conference" honors 3 of his 4 years. Having always been a student of the game, he has had the privilege of working with such nationally acclaimed teachers as Peter Kostis, Jack Lumpkin and Chuck Cook. Even today, he searches for newer, better and easier teaching techniques that will aid his students in improving their skills and game. His focus, since returning to Idabel, has been Juniors where his first summer program exceeded even his expectations. Several of his students have shown great progress, playing their way to State and even the Tournament of Champions. "I want to give back a little of what I have enjoyed," said Self. In his youth, Don Murphy, then the Golf Professional at Texarkana Country Club, took the time to help me and any other juniors he could. "I owe it to him to keep giving back!" says Self. |
